How long 'til Christmas?
24 Days
14 Hours
39 Minutes
...But who's counting?
24 days. It seemed like just yesterday, we were watching wildland fires in Northern California. That night of lightning was an awesome sight. What a show. The next morning fires scattered the north part of the state. It seemed as though fire season would be never ending. All we could think about was fire.
Now winter has set in. If a fire starts now, the cold alone will make it lay down at night. We still have not had a lot of rain or snow though. With the right wind, it could still burn in Northern California, though it's not very likely.
This is usually the time of year we winterize the equipment and take inventory of needed repairs. One of our trailers has some significant damage. One of our trailers is in need of more supplies. One of our medical trailers is still in Galveston Texas. I doubt we will see it back in California before spring. One of the trailers may cycle out of service this spring and a new one put in it's place. Deciding on the replacement is not an easy task. We want enough room to work comfortably, yet want the trailer small enough to get into smaller camps. FL07 has proven to be a very comfortable trailer to work out of, but is very large. It requires a classA driver's license to tow it. So, the new trailer might not be as big. Who knows? I might decide to go even bigger. We have been seriously looking at a Perterbuilt Truck with a 53' custom trailer.
Frontline is preparing for winter classes. We will be teaching a First Responder class in January for FIRECOURSE.COM. We are preparing a Line Emt class as well. We will be submitting the class to NWCG very soon. If the class is approved, we will be able to issue NWCG qualification certificates. It would actually become a requirement to be qualified on your redcards. I'll keep you posted.
That's the latest and greatest update for now.

Good Morning. Happy Thanksgiving.
Thanksgiving is the appointed time
for focusing on the good in our lives.
In each of our days,
we can find small blessings,
but too often we overlook them,
choosing instead to spend our time
paying attention to problems.
We give our energy
to those who cause us trouble
instead of those who bring peace.
Starting now,
let’s be on the lookout
for the bits of pleasure in each hour,
and appreciate the people who
bring love and light to everyone
who is blessed to know them.
You are one of those people.
On Thanksgiving,
I’m thankful for you.
Happy Thanksgiving!
Everybody have an absolutely wonderful day. No matter where you rest your heels today, remember to carry the love of your family, the love of your friends, and the love of all mankind .... cherish what you have.

The kitchen folks are busy planning an Old Fashion Thanksgiving Dinner. They are making Turkey, Ham, Sweet Potatoes, Green Beans, Cranberries, Stuffing, Gravy, and Pumpkin Pie.
A message to the kitchen folks... Thank you so much for your outstanding efforts. It does not go unnoticed. Adding your special touch to your meal preparations makes our meals away from home... more like home. Thank-you for all the creativity. The deserts are outstanding. The S'mores...casserole like...whatever it was. Oh MY GOD!! How decadent. Oh....and let's see... the Peach Cobbler.....to die for. My key criteria for any restaurant is consistency. You have mastered that. You should be proud of the service you have been providing. THANK YOU.
A big thank-you to TEEN Challenge, as well, for all your hard work in the kitchen.
Everybody has become "family". For the folks who have been there everyday, it would to imagine a holiday meal without their new "family". I am sure the Thanksgiving meal will be as close to home as possibly practical.
On another note... Galveston is still messed up. I overheard some citizens talking, while waiting in line at the UPS store. One got three feet of water, but his house was built on stilts ... so he was OK. The other got fourteen feet of water... no stilts. They said they knew of people who will not return to the island. They lost so much, it was not even worth attempting to salvage their property. I heard one lady say she refused to make Thanksgiving Dinner until her family was back in their home. That was hard for me to understand. I thought she would be thankful for having her family. I guess you can't imagine how it feels to lose all your valued possessions until you actually are in that boat yourself. It is easy to say.."be thankful for this...for that...your alive" . I bet doesn't feel much like living when your pictures, your clothes, your dishes, your furniture, your home...are gone. Not moved, not stashed somewhere, not hiding.... just gone.
On that note... Let's everybody have a happy Thankgiving. If you are with family, love them...cherish the day you get to spend with them. If you are with friends, love them too...cherish the day you get to spend with them. We have made Thanksgiving a "Family" holiday. Remember....the first Thankgiving was not "family"....it was new aquantinces. New friends. Strange friends. All sharing one common day. All sharing one common goal. All sharing.

The wind is blowing in Galveston. It is cold.... oh yeah... the wind is blowing. It is looking like we will be here through December. My guess is January will we spent in Galveston as well.
The traffic is horrible here. There seems to be a lot of people driving, with no real place to go. The freeways here are very confusing. If you see a place you want to go to, the exit for that place was two miles back. The next exit is two miles ahead. You then exit, make U-turn onto a service road and go back to where you thought you needed to be. Most of the time you find that you can't get to where you wanted to get. You must go past your desired destination...once again..and get back onto the freeway. Then you must remember which exit you should have taken the first time through. If you miss it again, the process repeats itself. I have come to realize....If Texas would just put the exits where they needed to be to begin with, the U.S. would use about 10 million less barrels of oil per day. It would be a huge step towards foreign oil independence. So....write your congressman. Start a movement. Have Texas fix their freeway exits.

It was 24 degrees this morning. The air was cold and crisp. No snow yet, so all the skiers are patiently waiting. Boreal is making snow... I don't how well that really works. I suppose it helps build a deeper base so when the real snow falls, the real snow can stick to the ground.....yadda yadda yadda. Listen to me. Like really know what I am talking about. Like I really care about skiing conditions. All I know is that the air was cold this morning. The meadow was white with frost. For a brief moment I visioned a beach with white sand. Then I opened the door....that dream was shattered. No sand. Just frozen grass.
Below are some pics of a Bobcat. He was hunting in the meadow. I snuck out to the fence and hid behind some tall grass. I made some noises that, I thought, sounded like a squirrel. The cat then stalked me. I know...I know... probably not the smartest thing to do. At first I thought it was cool. Then it hit me. What is he going to think when he finds me instead of a squirrel? Well.... he kind of blew me off. Like he knew all along it wasn't a squirrel. He didn't run away. He just kind of walked...cool like. He wasn't afraid of me or my fake squirrel noises. At on point, the only thing between he and i was the fence. He was about two feet from me. Anyways..... I thought i would share the pics with you.

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. (AP) — Firefighters were racing early Friday to push back a wind-whipped wildfire that destroyed about 80 homes and a college dormitory in the tony community of Montecito, injured four people and forced thousands to flee the longtime celebrity hideaway.
The fire broke out just before 6 p.m. Thursday and spread to about 2,000 acres — more than 3 square miles — within hours, destroying dozens of luxury homes and parts of a college campus in the foothills of Montecito, just southeast of Santa Barbara. About 5,400 of the community's 14,000 residents were evacuated and more could be forced to flee if the fire spreads, said Terri Nisich, a spokeswoman with the Santa Barbara County Executive Office.
At Westmont College, a Christian liberal arts college nestled amid wooded rolling hills, some 1,000 students were caught off-guard by the rapidly moving flames.
"It came pretty fast," said Tyler Rollema, a 19-year-old sophomore who was eating dinner in the cafeteria when students were told to head to the gym. "We came out and it was just blazing."

Santa Ana's to blow today. Record highs in parts of California. Rh's will drop. Fire weather watch issued.
I don't think it will do much if a fire is started. It has been pretty moist.
Heads up anyways. Just because the season is all but over, don't let your guard down. If you are working a fire, keep your head in the game. Fire is fire....it will still hurt you....even if it is cold and wet outside. Pretty soon we will all be enjoying our families around a Christmas Dinner. Stay Safe.

Beach Rescue
Pulled from the grasp of the Gulf by Frontline Medical personnel.
It is believed he flew in from Gulf Port Mississippi.... not by choice.
He rode the winds of Ike for a portion of the trip, then surfed in on the tidal surge. As he approached Sea Wall Blvd, he lost his board on the rocks and fell victim to the crashing waves.
It is completely unknown how he survived the trauma of being smashed against the rock wall. Perhaps being long time member and celebrity on Public Broadcast Television, he was exposed to a high number of Wilderness Survival shows. However it came to be, Big Bird is now the token mascot employee. He is forever grateful to the Frontline Personnel who rescued him.
No statement from rescue personnel was obtained, as they wished to remain anonymous.

President Elect - Barack Obama

Everybody in camp watched the results as they were posted.
As of Wednesday morning, Obama had 349 electoral votes compared to 173 for McCain, with only North Carolina left to declare. The Democrat won 52 percent of the popular vote, while John McCain garnered 46 percent
President-elect Barack Obama stood before tens of thousands jammed into Chicago's Grant Park Tuesday night and told them: "Change has come to America."
In his first speech as victor, Obama catalogued the challenges ahead. "The greatest of a lifetime," he said, "two wars, a planet in peril, the worst financial crisis in a century.
“Young and old, rich and poor, Democrat and Republican, black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Native American, gay, straight, disabled and not disabled, Americans have sent a message to the world that we have never been just a collection of red states and blue states,” he said. “We have been and always will be the United States of America".
Now it's time to stand together as one Nation. Let's not make this more of a racial moment than it already is. He is not black. He is not white. He is a man we elected as our next President. Respect that. He may not be a perfect leader, or he may just end up being the best leader this country has ever seen. He now deserves the chance to lead this country. We deserve the chance to be lead. We all come from diverse backgrounds. The only thing "common" in this country is our ability to stand united. Let's stand united.

Amen Papa--
Of course your incredibly liberal college student daughter was insanely excited about the victory for Obama. :) I was really sad when I heard some people (Mostly McCain supporters) say some terribly racist and rude things about Obama...
We are, all of us, links in a chain of humanity. One life is never any more valuable than any other – not because its owner is a certain color, a certain ethnicity, has a certain amount of money, drives a certain car, owns certain things, does a certain job, lives in a certain place, wears a certain brand of clothes, worships a certain deity or has an iron grip on a sunny personality all the time.
The human experience is a complex one: a diorama of emotions, some exhilarating, some humbling, some heartbreaking. What binds us together – or should bind us together – is the care we have for each other. Our differences should enrich us, not divide us.
If there is shame here, the only place it belongs is at our own feet, for ignoring the needs of those among us who are suffering, usually desperately and in silence.
The biggest part of that illness is prejudice.
LOVE, AMY
