One last blast of winter? Yesterday it was 65 degrees, today it is going to snow. Have I mentioned how much I dislike the snow?
For the past few days, we have been giving one of the horses antibiotics... twice each day. Let me tell you about fun. When a horse says.."no way, I'm not drinkin' that!"... it becomes a battle. One person must hold his head down, the other person puts a 60cc syringe into his mouth.... and the fight is on. The reason we are doing this? He stepped on something ... an old nail, piece of wire, who knows? Horses always find the things they are supposed to stay away from. He has a puncture wound straight up through the frog on his front foot. Of course he is the tallest horse we have...17 hands! In case you don't understand that measurement, it is 68-70 inches to the top of his shoulders. Now you add his head on top of that, you have a tall horse. He is built kind of like a giraffe....with a shorter neck. Soooo... with my TALL build, giving medicine is a breeze! Hah!!
The night we had the vet here, he decided to kick me....the horse did, not the vet. He got me with his hoof, right on the forearm, close to my elbow. I tolerated his wicked behavior, due to his injured foot. I guess he just wanted to even up the playing field. Anyways... he has a padded dressing on his hoof that must be changed every 2-3 days. He gets about 50cc of antibiotics twice a day. Now it's going to snow again! Fun.
Stay Safe.

orbs. I still laugh at that.
Here on the home front, the snow is melting fast. The late morning air has been warm. Last I heard frogs in the meadow for the first time this year. That tells me spring is here. Frogs are springs alarm clock. Mosquitoes are springs snooze button. There will be mosquitoes this year.
Another visitor in the spring for two years running.... a porcupine. I cannot find him, but I see the damage he does to the trees. He is very busy at night. Last night I set a live trap out. I didn't catch a porcupine, but..... I did catch a Grey Fox. I opened the trap door this morning and he ran away, unharmed. I had the trap baited with carrots, brussel sprouts, and rock salt. I'm not sure what the Fox was after.
Now it is a matter of pride. I am being out smarted by a 20lb tree rat. There are several trees that will die this year, due to the damage he is doing. I don't want to hurt him, just relocate him deeper into the forest. First, I have to find him. Everyday, I scan the trees. I can find Owls, Squirrels, Quail, many other birds.....but no Porcupine. Everyday, I find new wood chips at the base of a different tree. I can almost hear him laughing at me.
I'll keep you posted.

Those crazy races are still going to take place. Our one and only entrant has had to cancel his quest for the gold. He says it is because he cannot get off work. I hear the fear in his voice though. There was a bit of a quiver when he spoke. He emailed me.... his typing even shook. Fear? Smarts? Either way, I have a vision of his hand reaching out... oh so far... stretching... trying to grab that gold medal. No luck. It is out of reach.
There is actually no medal to grab. Of course I am just funning him. There is always next year. He can train. He can attempt to redeem his courage. We will wait.... we'll see if he grows a pair of courage production spheres.
One thing is for certain. Sliding down a mountain at breakneck speeds is a dangerous sport. Fire season is close. He will remain uninjured and be available to care for all those firefighters. He will have no large medical bills. His legs will remain straight. His arms will still bend where they are supposed to. His eyes still work, his nose is straight, his teeth are still in his mouth. The more I think about it, the smarter he becomes. He might have actually won the race without even racing.
Next year.....spheres...spheres...spheres! (chanting) Spheres! Spheres!
Ps. Toaka says. "Does this mean we don't get a victory snack?"

Happy Birthday! ... you know who you are.
Longboard Races! This weekend.
14' boards strapped to the feet of some very enthusiastic individuals... a very big hill (with snow on it)... a big log in their hand (used as a brake)... a starting pistol... and down they go!! Some reach speeds of 88mph!!! Are they insane?!? Ok,Ok... it's a straight shot down the mountain... no turns to navigate... no but when they reach the bottom of the hill....THEY HAVE TO STOP!!! They stop by sticking a big log into the snow. Now... my brain instantly asks... what happens if your log breaks...or you drop our log? What is going STOP you? Maybe you don't stop. Maybe you slide all the way to Graeagle (9miles away). Maybe you are never heard from again. Who knows? All I know is... neither God or Darwin has placed 14' boards on my feet. No where in my evolutionary process or spiritual beliefs have I found the need to slide 88mph down a hill.
So... with all that said... Ya'll have fun! I'll stand at the bottom of that hill...camera in hand... and wait for your moment of adrenalin enhanced glory to be over. I am sure I will giggle at the spectacle of speed you will make of yourself. My camera will rapidly click away, documenting each high speed moment. Of course, my photos will be used for future entertainment, as I will surely share my photos with a very large number of people. Especially once they have been photoshopped and adjusted to meet the needs of humor.
Sunday, March 15, 2009 is the day.
More to come.
Ps. Toaka says..."What are they thinking? Can I have their snacks?"

Good Morning.
2' of snow two nights ago. It seemed to take forever to plow that mess up. They say it supposed to snow again today, but I see a lot of blue sky so far.
Not a lot going on right now.
American idol is rigged....I think. They picked a girl for the final 12 who cannot sing. They turned down several people who absolutely blow her away. Blah blah blah.
Dancing with the Stars has started. I haven't watched an episode yet.
Wheel of Fortune...Vanna wore a different dress last night....Oh...I guess that's nothing new.
A new show... "The Eleventh Hour" has pretty good story lines, but the supporting actress is absolutely horrible. You gotta watch this show at least once. You will laugh at her acting. If they don't kill her off, the show will die. It airs Thursday nights.
Have a great day.
