The day after Thanksgiving. Black Friday. Everything is "On-Sale". It's official... the Christmas Season is underway.

The Day of the Dead Bird has come and gone. Dinner was.... well.... it was "Thanksgiving Dinner". Turkey stuffed with old bread, Cranberries, Mashed Potatoes with Gravy (made from turkey grease), Sweet Potatoes, Green Beans, and Pumpkin Pie with Whipped Cream.

As I watched all the happenings yesterday, I came up with a few questions.

Why do we always eat Turkey? The Pilgrims ate mostly Venison.

Why do we stuff the Turkey with old bread? Stuffing kind of makes sense.... it is a mixture of all the old leftover stuff.... made into something tasteful.

Cranberries? Well... they are very difficult to farm. I know the Pilgrims didn't have the agricultural know how to grow and harvest cranberries. They may have found some wild cranberries. Perhaps they just bought a bag of cranberries at a local Indian camp store.

Mashed Potatoes? Potatoes were most likely an abundant staple..... easy to grow, easy to store, easy to cook.

Sweet Potatoes? Why do we insist on serving two kinds of potatoes?

Green Beans? On Thanksgiving, Americans serve Green Beans at almost every dinner table in America. How did we become so supportive of the Green Bean industry? It's a "once a year" "special" meal, why not serve something a little more exotic? How about Artichoke Hearts.... cooked in butter and Garlic? Something a little spicier than an old Green Bean.

..... and Pumpkin Pie? The Pilgrims didn't have sugar abundantly available, so I am sure a sweet pumpkin pie was not on the menu of our forefathers. I know Whipped Cream with sugar and vanilla was not available.

Sooo...... "The Day of the Dead Bird" has come and gone. The food has gone.....well, most of it.

Enjoy your Black Friday. Eat leftovers. Watch TV. Have another piece of pie....with whipped cream. Go buy something at a store. Kick off the Christmas Season with a bang..... Just like the Indians and Pilgrims did.
